- First “cuts” will be made at the end of practice on Wednesday. Second “cuts” will be made by the end of the week as necessary.
- First scrimmage is Thursday, August 15 vs. McLean HS at McLean HS at 6 PM
- Second scrimmage is Thursday, August 22 vs. Mount Vernon HS at Fairfax HS at 6 PM
- As a general rule, we will have game or practice activities every day, Monday through Saturday until our season ends, including all breaks. Attendance at ALL team practices, meetings and games is MANDATORY. If you must miss due to extenuating circumstances you need to contact Coach PRIOR to the start of practice. For the most part, outside of illness or family emergency, all absences will be considered unexcused. Unexcused absences will result in sitting out game time.
Prerequisites to trying out
- You cannot try out unless you bring (or have on file) a Physical Examination Form.
- You have registered for Tryouts on the school athletic site https://fairfaxhighsports.org/ (you will find Student Registration for Sports on the panel on the left side of the screen. Make sure you select boys volleyball. This will include your emergency contact information as well as both you and one of your parents going through the concussion education slideshow.
*Register by Friday, August 2nd . If I do not have them (filled out completely), you will be unable to participate!!!!!.*
Selection Criteria
Skills - players will be assessed on their ability to execute skills in both individual and team settings.
Athleticism/size/fitness/talent - height, speed, endurance, strength, and reaction time will all be considered.
Teamwork - volleyball teams have 6 people on the court at all times. Players need to communicate effectively and understand how to adjust for their teammates
Academics - players will be expected to meet all academic requirements for FCPS athletes. Although classes will not have started by tryouts, academic performance during the season will be taken into consideration for playing time.
Attitude/conduct - As athletes, players are representing the school and the volleyball program. Players will be expected to maintain a positive attitude, encourage their teammates, and be able to take constructive criticism positively. Disciplinary issues may lead to dismissal from the team.
Work ethic - players who are motivated, passionate about the sport, and who put in the work will be at an advantage in the selection process
Limited Roster Size - Positions will be a determining factor in roster construction. A team requires multiple players at each position.
Not everyone can make the team
Competition for selection onto a high school volleyball team is fierce, as only 10-14 players will make the Varsity team. No player likes to be told he’s not good enough to make the team; no coach likes to tell a player that either. But it has to be done for some when there are a limited number of roster spots. If you should fail to make the team, don’t be too dejected. Getting cut doesn’t mean a player isn’t a quality individual, or even a quality volleyball player. Players sometimes aren’t at their best at exactly the wrong time. Coaches can make mistakes, too. Whatever the circumstances for not making the team, there are plenty of good opportunities for those players not chosen: other Fairfax fall sports, recreation youth volleyball leagues, etc. If you don’t make the team, you can work hard on improving all aspects (remember the selection criteria) of your game; perhaps even to the point where you can out-compete others for a roster spot next year.
- Athletes must complete the following steps and bring the necessary forms to tryout:
