Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Robinson Secondary School

Game Date
Jan 9, 2018

Playing in the cavernous, but dimly light,  Robinson High School fieldhouse, Fairfax took on the Rams in a Patriot Conference game Tuesday night.  The script for the game could have been written by widely-acknowledged literary great, but little known as a hoops fan, Chuck Dickens.  As Chucky D once uttered, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and that is an apt description for this game, a game where both teams took turns making runs and the lead changed hands a number of times.  Unfortunately, it was the Rams who made the last run and thus did they come away with a 53-47 win in a game that felt a lot closer than that final score.

Playing in the 2nd part of a girls-boys doubleheader and seemingly with only about 1/2 of the lights in use, the Rebs quickly fell behind 5-0.  But Chase Ackerman shortly evened things up on a bucket after a 3-pointer by classmate Josh Ab-three.  Moments later Josh hit another 3, Ricky-Pete-ee-a scored off a steal of a Rams inbounds pass and later made another bucket to knot the game at 12.  A 3-pointer by Chazzo gave the Rebs a 15-14 lead, while another short jumper regained the lead for Fairfax at 17-16.  But the Rams hit once more before the buzzer, taking an 18-17 lead into the best-of-times between periods.

In the 2nd period, Josh hit another 3, Wiki tied things at 25, but missed the "and one", Daniel Mbangue gave his team a 27-25 lead and Aziz Abousam absolutely buried a 3-pointer for the final points of the period, which finished off a 10-0 run and gave his team a 30-25 lead at the half.  Chucky didn't know which side to sit on or to root for.

Robinson came out strong in the 3rd period, tying things up at 34, before the teams exchanged baskets to end the period tied once again, this time at 38.  Josh Money cashed in on yet another 3-pointer to start the 4th period making it 41-38 in favor of the visitors and Sunshine netted the front end of a 1-and-1 to make it 42-38.  But then the bottom fell out, as the Rams scored the next 9 points to re-take the lead, 47-42.  The Rebs had fallen back to their foul(ing) ways and Robinson made them pay by going 11-14 from the line in the period (15-18 for the game, while the Rebels could manage only 4 out of 12).  Still, the Rebs kept battling.  Mbangue's 2 makes from the line brought his team to 44-47 and a 3-pointer by the Maestro with 13.7 seconds remaining brought Fairfax to within 2 at 47-49.  A jump ball situation occurred and it was the Rebels' ball on the alternate possession rule.  But bringing the ball out of the backcourt and looking for one of his band-members spread amongst the 4 corners of the court, KC was called for a double dribble violation and that was that for the Rebs.  The Rams swished a few more free throws and the Rebels took home a tough loss.,

Ab-three was at it again, this time netting 4 of his signature hits, which put him the school record books for the most 3-pointers (14) over a 3-game stretch.  He led the team in scoring tonight with his 12 markers, closely followed by Chase with 11 and Wikipetey-a with 10.  Wiki made 5 out of his 7 shot attempts, Mr. Conductor  grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 8 assists, while Aziz set a new personal standard with 7 steals.  KC has now blown past the 250 mark in career assists.

The men in gray now show a record of 9-5 overall, 1-1 in conference play.  Next up back on home ice on Friday, the Runnin' Bruins of Lake Braddock who prefer an up-tempo game - we'll see what the Maestro has to say about that.  It's Senior Night for the homers so come out and show your appreciation for the soon-to-be-ex-Rebels.
