JEFFERSON HS : 32
You wanna know how fast the internet is these days? As soon as I got home from the game today, I googled the word "ugly" and a YouTube video of today's contest against Jefferson came up! Indeed, it was ugly, but it was also a W, so we'll focus on that aspect.
Playing the 2nd game of the day in round 2 of the Rebels Roundball Classic after having played the final game of round 1, the Rebels looked somnambulent for the vast majority of the game. They fell behind early but late in the initial period Ryan Pelczynski canned the second of his two free-throw attempts to tie the game at 11. Moments later Daniel Mbangue registered his only hoop of the morning to tie the game again, this time at 13. And that's where things stood at the end of the 1st quatrain.
During the latter stages of the next period, the Colonials took an 18-16 lead but soon found themselves behind 22-19 by the end of the period. RickyBobby hit a bucket to yield that score, which remained unchanged for the rest of the period. Ackerman registered 5 points in the period, hitting both of his shots. But the Rebs were really struggling to run their sets and their on-the-ball pressure was having little or no effect on the Colonials.
The pace of the game slowed even further in the 3rd period and Fairfax was outscored 6-4, giving them a slim1-point margin at 26-25 entering the final quarter. As soon as TJ tied the game at 30, Josh Abtew found the range from 3-point land to make the score 33-30. TJ made a bucket but missed the and-one opportunity to knot things up again. So, with 2:02 remaining in the game, the Rebels clung to a one-point lead. 33-32. Jefferson had numerous chances to re-take the lead but had no luck at all in making a shot from anywhere. Colbert had a one-and-one opportunity to up the lead a bit but couldn't throw the ball in the ocean to take advantage. Chuckerman had the same opportunity, with the same result. Finally, with 4.1 ticks remaining, Aziz Abousam stepped to the line for his attempts to salt the game away. While he didn't put the score out of reach, he did manage to make 1 of his shots. Thankfully TJ was not able to get a shot off before the horn sounded and Fairfax escaped with a desultory 34-32 win. They will play Annandale for 5th place in the tourney on Friday afternoon.
Lord Leaply led the team with 12 points, followed by Chucky and Josh with 9 apiece. For the 2nd game in a row, the orchestra leader failed o score, but their is no denying that the entire offense runs through him, as he led the team with 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals, while continuing his assault on the program's assist marks, adding 5 more today. Rackerman also snared 7 boards, tying his career mark in that category.
One more game in the back-to-back-to-back series and then the Rebels will have time to go look for their shooting touch. Come see how they do, then you can go ring in the new year.
