|Fairfax High School||57|
|West Springfield High School||43|
It was absolutely frigid outside and it was pretty cold inside the gym too, colder even than the friendly confines of Laing Ice Palace. The only thing warm on the whole night was the play of the Rebels, and that was HOT!Jacquez Napper controlled the tip, which ended up in the hands of Chase Ackerman, who laid it up and in. Josh Abtew followed with a 3-pointer and then KC Colbert recorded a hit and before you knew it, Fairfax was up 7-0. After a Spartan free throw, the Rebels stretched the lead to 10-1 on a 3-pointer by Chuckerman. All the while, the Rebels were playing frenetic defense and forcing the Spartans into rushed decisions which led to numerous turnovers on their part. Just before the end of the period, Abtew hit from long-range again and the buzzer sounded with a 13-13 tie.
From that point forward, the Rebels seized control and never looked back. The Chuckster hit his 2nd 3-pointer of the night right out of the chute to give the Rebs a 16-13 lead, Abtew knocked down 1 from inside and another ho-hum three-ster, Lord Leaply skied for 2, Daniel Mbangue hit both of his attempts from the line and, finally, coming out of a TO called by Coach B with 6.6 ticks remaining, Chucky soared to the rim on a designed play and tickled the twines for his 6th and 7th points of the period and a 30-18 halftime lead for the men in gray.
In the 3rd period, 1 player scored all 4 buckets for the Spartans, while Ab-three hit twice more from distance and the rest of the team garnered 6 free throws. 4th period highlights included Ab-tew scoring off another Coach B special coming out of a timeout, 6 more points for Jack-er-man and 2 spirit-breaking buckets by RickyPetey. Final score: 57-43 in favor of the Rebs, bringing the overall record to 9-4, while starting off conference play 1-0 (does anyone even know what the name of our conference is??).
Chuckerman and Ab-three tied for game-high scoring honors with 19 points. For the second game in a row Josh hit 5 3-pointers, marking only the second time in program history that back-to-back feat has been accomplished (Jay Parrish in 1998-99 was the first). Mind you, this time it took only 8 attempts for those 5 successes. Josh has now surpassed the 200 career-point mark while Chase's total now exceeds 225. Elsewhere, MDaniel Mbangue had perhaps his finest overall game of the year, hitting 6 of 8 free throws for his 6 points, to go along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals and 1 block. RickyP also had 6 points and 4 steals, Quez was ferocious inside with 7 (!) offensive rebounds and KaySee had a ho-hum (for him) 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals.
It is a varsity double header so come see both teams in action!
